BAE TARHATA ALONTO-LUCMAN
first Muslim lady governor of Lanao del Sur
Princess Tarhata "Tata" Alonto Lucman is the first Muslim lady governor of Lanao del Sur, appointed in 1971. She is a member of one of the royal families of Maranao, she fought the Martial Rule of the deposed President Marcos. Known as Tata, she is better known as a rido (clan conflict) settler, noted in a TIME magazine article for helping the release of kidnapped nuns in Marawi City in 1986. From 2001, she has been leading the Muslim-dominated province of Lanao del Sur, the Autonomous Regional Government in Muslim Mindanao.
Born into royalty among Ramain’s Sultanates, Tata as a girl-child looked up to other pioneering Moro ladies like Princess Tarhata Kiram and Dayang Dayang Piandao of Sulu who were able to get educated and travel abroad and to the capital. Within her one year of schooling in her hometown, she was accelerated to grade 4 at the tender age of 6 years old.
The only English-speaking among the household, she acted as translator at the busy home of her father, Alauya Alonto , who was a religious leader and politician. Tata was reared in the world of politics. She assisted her father, who was “no read, no write” in his travels to Manila. This would be her training ground in the man’s world. Constantly defying rules, Tata also didn’t want to marry someone not her choice. She was constantly engaged by her family to men from Maranao buena pamilia , but she would break the betrothals . She would find that the constant visitor, mentor at her home would be interested in her. She soon married Sultan Al-Rashid Lucman.
AIMAN CAIRODEN PANGANDA O MRANAO
MSU's First Muslim Summa cum Laude
Aiman Cairoden, son of a poor Maranaw widow, just wanted to have a college diploma so he can have a decent job and help send his five siblings to school.
Cairoden did not just receive a college diploma on Thursday (April 4), but also brought honor and fame to his home-province of Lanao del Sur for graduating summa cum laude from the state-run Mindanao State University's (MSU) 2013 Bachelor of Science in Biology class.
He is the first ever Moro student to achieve such feat since the creation of the University in 1961.
The MSU is the biggest government-owned university in Mindanao.
Cairoden, son of a Maranaw driver who died in a car accident two years ago, is an ethnic Maranaw from the first district of Lanao del Sur.
Since the university was created in 1961, all of its summa cum laude graduates were non-Muslims, mostly Visayans.
Cairoden’s mother and siblings wept as he delivered his valedictory address before 1,926 graduates at the Dimaporo Gymnasium inside the MSU campus.
Cairoden was known in the MSU campus as a studious and frugal student, who spent his money wisely.
He has many Muslim and Christian friends from whom he borrowed science text books.
relatives said Cairoden is still uncertain if he would proceed to study medicine or immediately look for a job so he can help send his younger siblings to school.
SPEECH OF SULTAN KUDARAT
What have you done? Do you realize what subjection would reduce you to? A toilsome slavery under the Spaniards! Turn your eyes to the subject nations and look at the misery to which such glorious nation had been reduced to, look at the Tagalog and Visayan: Are you better than they? Do you think that the Spaniards consider you of better stuff? Have you not seen the Spaniards trample them under their feet? Do you not see everyday how they are obliged to work at the oars and the factories with all their rigors? Can you tolerate anyone with little Spanish blood to beat you up and grasp the fruits of your labor? Allow your selves to be subjects (today) and tomorrow you will be at the oars; I, at least will be a pilot, the biggest favor they will allow a chief. Do not let their sweet words deceive you; their promises facilities their deceits, which little by little, enable them to control everything, reflect on how even minor promises to the chief of other nations were not honored until they become master of them all, see now what is being done to these chief and how they are being led by rod.

LEGENDARY MARANAO HERO
AMAI PAKPAK (DATU AKADIR)
A fearless Maranao warrior, Amai Pakpak, also known as Datu Akadir, born in Buadi sa Kayo, lived and died for the cause of Muslim freedom. He was famous for his heroic military exploits against the Spaniards, particularly in his defense of the legendary Kota Marahui (Marawi), the fortification made of earth and stone, which he had built. The Kota served as a bulwark against the Spanish invasions of 1891 and 1895.
Today, Kota Marahui is now known as Camp Amai Pakpak. The nearest landmark, located several meters away, is the Agus 2 hydraulic plant since 1650, when the Maranaos routed the Spanish expeditionary forces sent by Governor Corcuera, Lake Lanao had been free of foreign intrusion. It was not until 1891 that the Spaniards sent another invading force to try to capture the lake area. Personally led by Governor-General Valeriano Weyler, the campaign, begun in April, aimed to establish military strongholds in key points over Lanao and Cotabato. To carry this out, Weyler organized more than a thousand troops who were transported to Iligan Bay by four ships packed with military supplies. The main objective was Kota Marahui, which had been heavily fortified by cannons and guns, the Muslim warriors manning them ready to sacrifice their lives.
On August 19, Marahui fell, but the following day, Amai Pakpak and his forces reconsolidated and launched a fierce counterattack, proving that despite Marahui’s loss, the rest of Lanao was not about to give up. On August 21, 1891, the Spaniards launched a two-pronged attack. They bombarded the fort, overwhelming its defenders. Both sides sustained heavy casualties, though Amai Pakpak and his men who survived the onslaught eluded capture by retreating into the lake settlements. There, they regrouped. The Spaniards did not savor their initial victory for long. Three days later, the Muslims were back a bigger and more formidable force that compelled them to withdraw in their own redoubts in North Lanao.
Henceforth, the Muslims regularly staged lightning raids, in small units, against enemy settlements in southern Misamis Oriental and Iligan. This went on for four years. In time, the colonial government decided that if the stalemate were to end and the Muslim settlements around Lake Lanao subdued, the campaign on land should be bolstered by naval support a strategy that had found success elsewhere in Mindanao. Thus, a fleet of four steel-armed light gunboats was sent to the lake within a period of one year, from 1894 to

Dansalan Declaration Overviews
Datus of Lanao, with thirty Sultans signed a strongly worded letter, popularly known as "Dansalan Declaration" to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and the United States Congress asking them that the Filipinos should be granted independence and the Moro Province should also be given their own independence or better left under American rule until such time that they were prepared to grant their independence to be known as Bangsamoro.
If we look at the history of the Bangsamoro people, there were many declarations and petitions by then Moro leaders to exclude themselves under the Unitary Philippine corrupted Republic example,
1)– June 9, 1921 - petition of the people of Sulu, they stated clearly: “ We are independent for 500 years. Even Spain failed to conquer us. If the United States quits the Philippines, and the Filipinos attempt to govern us. We will fight.”
2) - February 1, 1924 - Declaration of Rights and Purposes(Zamboanga declaration) forwarded to the US Congress, lead by Sultan Mangiging of Maguindanao, Hadji Panglima Nuno (Zamboanga), Datu Sacaluran (Zamboanga), Maharaja Habing (Zamboanga) , Abdulah Piang (Maguindanao) and Datu Benito of Lanao, a portion of declaration runs this; “In the event that the US grants independence to the Philippine Islands without provision for our retention under the American Flag, it is our firm intention and resolve to declare ourselves as independent Constitutional Sultanate to be known to the world as Moro Nation.”
3) - March 18, 1935 –Dansalan Declaration Lead by Hadji Abdulhamid Bongabong of Unayan and 189 Maranaos sent a letter of Appeal to the US Congress , the portion of appeal runs this: “ Should the American People grant Philippine independence, the Islands of Mindanao and Sulu should not be included in such independence. Our public land should not be given to other people other than the Moro Nat.
We should be given time to acquire them, because most of us have no lands. Our people do not yet realize the value of acquiring those lands by the process of law. Where shall we obtain the support of our family if our lands are taken from us? It will be safe to us that a law should be created restricting (the acquisition) of our land by other people.
This will avoid future trouble.”… Look at deeply the biases and unfair laws passed in the US Congress and Philippine Commonwealth that ignited those predicaments and eventually made Bangsamoro became strangers to their own homeland:
1) The Philippine Commission Act 2254 of 1913, requiring the Christians Settlers or Homesteaders from Luzon and Visayas to own 16 hectares of land in Mindanao while the native Bangsamoro to own only 8 hectares.
2) The Public Act 2874 of 1919, for the Christian Settlers to have 24 hectares whiles the native Moros only 10 hectares.
3) The Commonwealth Act 141 of 1936, 24 hectares for the Christians and only 4 hectares for the Moros, and many laws followed. Because of such laws, Christian settlers came to Mindanao in waves until such time outnumbered the Moro population.
So the Moro people became minority to their own homeland. and so, the declaration of Martial Law that killed and mayhem thousands of innocent civilians both settlers and Moros. Many provinces in Mindanao created without the consultations of the Bangsamoro.
History tells us also, that one of the Spaniard's objectives was to Christianized or even eradicate the Moros in Mindanao. If we borrow the accounts of Professor Melanio A. Laguardia (Pres. Southern Christian College, Midsayap, 2007.)
In his book Strengthening Muslim-Christian Solidarity “Because of the minority situation of the Muslims in the Philippines, there were those who believe that the solution to the Moro Problem is to eradicate all the Muslims.
After all, they would say that A GOOD MORO IS A DEAD MORO. Before we are carried emotionally with the argument, let us think that Christians in Southeast Asia are in the minority.
There are about 65 million Christians in Southeast Asia compared to about 150 million Muslims. This is not to mention the Muslims in South Asia and the Middle East. (1992)”.
“Had the Spaniards were delayed by one generation or half century in coming to the Philippines, the country could dominantly Muslims. Thus, it was pointed out jokingly that instead of a Moro Problem, we could have had an Ilocano Problem”.
Another account by a prominent Archbishop of Cotabato Orlando Quevedo, Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) on his Foreword in the Book “Understanding Mindanao Conflict” by Pat Diaz: “Through more than four centuries, the aspirations of Moros for their own place in the sun have never waned. They resisted the Spanish Conquistadores.
They fought against the Americans. Having at least accepted American governance many of their leaders preferred to remain under the Americans rather than to be under the Christian Filipinos.” Giving such circumstances, the revolutionary Bangsamoro (MILF) will surely detach themselves from the Filipino mainstream society. And to call them Filipino is unacceptable for them. Perhaps the MILF will be neutralized or dismembered in the future , but another generation of Bangsamoro group of same objective shall emerge, and so the problem even worse.
Every ancestral domain of different tribes in the Philippines have their right to claims their right to practice their customs and norms, but the Bangsamoro ancestral domain is quite differ among the other group such as the Tagbanuas, Bilaans and others. Before the coming of the Spaniards , the Muslims had already their own governance and had business contact and treaties with foreign countries, in fact, the 1st group of people called Moro by the Spaniards were the Muslims in Manila ruled by Rajah Sulaiman Mahmud and assisted by his uncle Rajah Matanda in 1570.
Rajah Sulaiman, the last Muslim Ruler in Manila preferred Martyrdom than to submit to the Spaniards. He perished in the hands of Capt. Martin de Goiti.
The entire Luzon and Visayas were subdued and Christianized thereafter. In 1619, Sultan Kudarat ascended the throne of Maguindanao Sultanate, he was the famous, and unparalleled Moro warrior in history, unconquered and died of old age at 90 in 1671. His sphere of influence and able to collect tribute reached as far as Mindoro, Zamboanga and some part of Borneo and the Visayas. He was honored to call him the “Greatest Muslim Moro Warrior in History of all time”.
According to Retired Gen. Esperon, the major reference for the resumption of the peace talk in the future between the GRP-MILF will be the unsigned MOA-AD (Mindanews, Sept.2008). So, if I may ask, I preferred to focus the area of BJE to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, forget other areas stipulated in the MOA –AD.
Let the MILF confront and overcome the multifaceted problems inherent to the Bangsamoro, not just a simple problem but it requires thorough repair or in medical parlance Major Surgery, such as low moral and spiritual upbringing among moros, illiteracy, too many loose firearms, the private armies, injustices, underdeveloped countryside, family feud, political dynasties, poor social and health services among rural folks and many more. Albeit, the basis in solving those problems should be strong moral and spiritual approach or foundation.
To the MILF, please let repeat the May 29, 2005 (Huge Moro Gathering in Darapanan town), call again the entire Bangsamoro masses to gather again in Darapanan and prove or show to the world that entire Bangsamoro people are for the MOA-AD.
The MILF is a legitimate revolutionary organization with full mandate from entire Bangsamoro if not all and with complete military set up. So, DDR or Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration as the new approach and a requisite for the resumption of another round of peace talks, is a tantamount to surrender on the part of the MILF.
If I may conclude my reaction, here are some points to consider in order achieving everlasting peace in Mindanao. Let the MOA-AD be signed anyway plebiscite may determine the fate of those affected areas, and this alone is a form of consultation, or the MOA-AD should be the basis for the resumption of another round of talks and the congress will passed into law any agreement signed after the plebiscite and lastly, sincerity and respect to the peace process and agreement is the win-win solution.

Madagasikara, 02/04/2015 at 10:33pm (UTC): As always colonialism is our problem...until we have this Stockholm Syndrome called Felipeno and Moro...we shall be killing each other defending our captors...Arabia, Spain/Vatican and USA (China joining in). Time to believe Jose Rizal - "To foretell our destiny (as people not as Felipenos and Moros)...it is necessary to open the book that tells of our past". Also: Lumingon sa pinanggalingan upang makarating sa paroroonan. We are not from Arabia to embrace Islam as much as we are not from Rome to love Catholicism. How can we ever pay tribute to our great ancestors for not recognizing them...their SPIRIT and RITUALS should be our spirituality. Our culture remains their culture...for language is the road map of a culture...we are still speaking their languages...defining who we are and draws the bounds of our true nations, named and made for us by our ancestors (not of Spain, Arabia, include USA and China).
Blood is thicker than religion.
Blood is thicker than this nation called Felipenas, obviously not named, surely not made and most probably not owned by us.
The blood of our Austronesian ancestors flowing into our veins is thicker than the Felipeno in us.
The blood of our Austronesian ancestors flowing into our veins is thicker than the Moro in us.
We are one in blood...we can have a family of nations. Time for this alien country to be dissolved! For all our problems can be solved:
No more puppet president.
No more China intrusion.
No more USA acquired country called Philippines.
No more Felipe.
No more Spanish Felipeno.
No more Arabian Moro.
No more imperial Manila.
No more economically exploited regions.
Patriots can now be possible (for a Felipeno Patriot/Hero is an oxymoron - how can one be...still all hail and glory to the oppressor named Felipe managed by uncle Sam).
Better than a federal singular nation (not feasible to be a federal, as much as presidential)- no majority language still. All federal states/nations have a majority language!
Here are our 14 nations!
Bangsa Maranao. Bangsa Maguindanao. Bangsa Subanen. Republic of Batanes. Ilocandia. Kaigorotan Federal. Republic of Pangasinan. Kapampangan Republic. Katagalugan Republic. Waray Republic. Hiligaynon Republic. Federal Republic of the Visayas. Bikolandia.
And a sovereign nation called Sultanate of Sulu (unlike just a province of Sulu under an illegitimate country called Felipenas) has all the historical, legal and ancestral rights to own back Sabah and Spratlys!

The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people who originate from Mindanao, a major island in the Philippines. It comes from the words "sari" and "manok." "Sari" means cloth or garment, which is generally of assorted colors. Manòk is a Philippine word for chicken.
It is the legendary bird that has become a ubiquitous symbol of Maranao art. It is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beak or talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiral motifs. It is said to be a symbol of good fortune
The Sarimanok is derived from a totem bird of the Maranao people, called Itotoro. According to the Maranao people, the Itotoro is a medium to the spirit world via its unseen twin spirit bird called Inikadowa.
The Sarimanok is also believed to have originated from an Islamic legend. According to the legend, Muhammad found a rooster in the first of the seven heavens. The bird was so large its crest touched the second heaven. Its crow roused every living creature except man. Judgement day would come once this celestial rooster ceased to crow
A Maranao legend also says of a Sultan's daughter being swept by a colorful rooster that became a handsome young man and they were never seen ever again. The Sultan then created replicas of the bird to remember his daughter by
