BAE TARHATA ALONTO-LUCMAN
first Muslim lady governor of Lanao del Sur
Princess Tarhata "Tata" Alonto Lucman is the first Muslim lady governor of Lanao del Sur, appointed in 1971. She is a member of one of the royal families of Maranao, she fought the Martial Rule of the deposed President Marcos. Known as Tata, she is better known as a rido (clan conflict) settler, noted in a TIME magazine article for helping the release of kidnapped nuns in Marawi City in 1986. From 2001, she has been leading the Muslim-dominated province of Lanao del Sur, the Autonomous Regional Government in Muslim Mindanao.
Early Life
Born into royalty among Ramain’s Sultanates, Tata as a girl-child looked up to other pioneering Moro ladies like Princess Tarhata Kiram and Dayang Dayang Piandao of Sulu who were able to get educated and travel abroad and to the capital. Within her one year of schooling in her hometown, she was accelerated to grade 4 at the tender age of 6 years old.
The only English-speaking among the household, she acted as translator at the busy home of her father, Alauya Alonto , who was a religious leader and politician. Tata was reared in the world of politics. She assisted her father, who was “no read, no write” in his travels to Manila. This would be her training ground in the man’s world. Constantly defying rules, Tata also didn’t want to marry someone not her choice. She was constantly engaged by her family to men from Maranao buena pamilia , but she would break the betrothals . She would find that the constant visitor, mentor at her home would be interested in her. She soon married Sultan Al-Rashid Lucman.
AIMAN CAIRODEN PANGANDA O MRANAO
MSU's First Muslim Summa cum Laude
Aiman Cairoden, son of a poor Maranaw widow, just wanted to have a college diploma so he can have a decent job and help send his five siblings to school.
Cairoden did not just receive a college diploma on Thursday (April 4), but also brought honor and fame to his home-province of Lanao del Sur for graduating summa cum laude from the state-run Mindanao State University's (MSU) 2013 Bachelor of Science in Biology class.
He is the first ever Moro student to achieve such feat since the creation of the University in 1961.
The MSU is the biggest government-owned university in Mindanao.
Cairoden, son of a Maranaw driver who died in a car accident two years ago, is an ethnic Maranaw from the first district of Lanao del Sur.
Since the university was created in 1961, all of its summa cum laude graduates were non-Muslims, mostly Visayans.
Cairoden’s mother and siblings wept as he delivered his valedictory address before 1,926 graduates at the Dimaporo Gymnasium inside the MSU campus.
Cairoden was known in the MSU campus as a studious and frugal student, who spent his money wisely.
He has many Muslim and Christian friends from whom he borrowed science text books.
relatives said Cairoden is still uncertain if he would proceed to study medicine or immediately look for a job so he can help send his younger siblings to school.

SPEECH OF SULTAN KUDARAT
What have you done? Do you realize what subjection would reduce you to? A toilsome slavery under the Spaniards! Turn your eyes to the subject nations and look at the misery to which such glorious nation had been reduced to, look at the Tagalog and Visayan: Are you better than they? Do you think that the Spaniards consider you of better stuff? Have you not seen the Spaniards trample them under their feet? Do you not see everyday how they are obliged to work at the oars and the factories with all their rigors? Can you tolerate anyone with little Spanish blood to beat you up and grasp the fruits of your labor? Allow your selves to be subjects (today) and tomorrow you will be at the oars; I, at least will be a pilot, the biggest favor they will allow a chief. Do not let their sweet words deceive you; their promises facilities their deceits, which little by little, enable them to control everything, reflect on how even minor promises to the chief of other nations were not honored until they become master of them all, see now what is being done to these chief and how they are being led by rod.

LEGENDARY MARANAO HERO
AMAI PAKPAK (DATU AKADIR)
A fearless Maranao warrior, Amai Pakpak, also known as Datu Akadir, born in Buadi sa Kayo, lived and died for the cause of Muslim freedom. He was famous for his heroic military exploits against the Spaniards, particularly in his defense of the legendary Kota Marahui (Marawi), the fortification made of earth and stone, which he had built. The Kota served as a bulwark against the Spanish invasions of 1891 and 1895.
Today, Kota Marahui is now known as Camp Amai Pakpak. The nearest landmark, located several meters away, is the Agus 2 hydraulic plant since 1650, when the Maranaos routed the Spanish expeditionary forces sent by Governor Corcuera, Lake Lanao had been free of foreign intrusion. It was not until 1891 that the Spaniards sent another invading force to try to capture the lake area. Personally led by Governor-General Valeriano Weyler, the campaign, begun in April, aimed to establish military strongholds in key points over Lanao and Cotabato. To carry this out, Weyler organized more than a thousand troops who were transported to Iligan Bay by four ships packed with military supplies. The main objective was Kota Marahui, which had been heavily fortified by cannons and guns, the Muslim warriors manning them ready to sacrifice their lives.
On August 19, Marahui fell, but the following day, Amai Pakpak and his forces reconsolidated and launched a fierce counterattack, proving that despite Marahui’s loss, the rest of Lanao was not about to give up. On August 21, 1891, the Spaniards launched a two-pronged attack. They bombarded the fort, overwhelming its defenders. Both sides sustained heavy casualties, though Amai Pakpak and his men who survived the onslaught eluded capture by retreating into the lake settlements. There, they regrouped. The Spaniards did not savor their initial victory for long. Three days later, the Muslims were back a bigger and more formidable force that compelled them to withdraw in their own redoubts in North Lanao.
Henceforth, the Muslims regularly staged lightning raids, in small units, against enemy settlements in southern Misamis Oriental and Iligan. This went on for four years. In time, the colonial government decided that if the stalemate were to end and the Muslim settlements around Lake Lanao subdued, the campaign on land should be bolstered by naval support a strategy that had found success elsewhere in Mindanao. Thus, a fleet of four steel-armed light gunboats was sent to the lake within a period of one year, from 1894 to

By Acmad (Ontay) M. Abdulmadid
Tribute to a True MNLF Rebel
During the dark and hard year of MNLF struggle for self- determination, he was “infamously” tagged as “ Commander Juma - the professor by day and rebel at night.”For a time, the story about “ Commander Juma” reverberated in both foreign and local media and it was not always balanced and fair. As a result, he had to suffer the full brunt of Irrational criticism. Mockery and leers of repugnance. Yet, through the years of crisscrossing the leech field jungles of Lanaos, and traveling the dangerous anti-Muslim infested road to Zamboanga City to contact his Tausog Brothers, and putting up with criticism, he was able to carefully manage his crisis with utmost civility.
Despite the negative reaction of others, his enthusiast to pursue the Moro cause never waned but rather all the more strengthened, because of his firm belief that it was only through a strongly determined political will coupled the help of the Almighty Allah, that the Moros of Mindanao will finally realize their aspirations.
His Academic position became his effected resource in sustaining the spirit of his noble will to convince the legions of Moro youth that, Indeed, the Moro need to be fully recognized and be given their valid claim to their God giving right. It was a lonesome endeavor, however, even in the academe, for only a handful of his colleagues understood his vision and mission. But perseverance, patience, loyalty, sincerity and commitment to the Moro struggle paved the way for him to fine more concrete means in advancing his cause. As a result, he had always served as a tower of strength fro those he had touched, young and old alike.
As a revolutionary man, Prof. Sani believed that military might was necessary for maintaining the strength of the liberation front. Yet, at the same time, while in the academe, he nurtured non-violent ideas which he patiently shared with others and lectured to students. He had always, in his teachings, explained and Nur Misuari. Even when the peace process dragged and almost relegated their hopes to the shadowy background, he continued to make sure that the Moro youth instilled in their minds the virtue of self-restraint and self-discipline that he is exemplified in his own way of non- violence.
Over the years, in his social environment, temptation to surrendered his cause persistently haunted him. Opportunities of various magnitudes alternately and even altogether kept knocking at his humble door. But he refuse to heed their calls. Today , he remains one of the two Iranaon/Maranao Original members of the top 90 freedom fighters trained in Pulau Pangkar, state of Penang, Malaysia, in the late 60’s who has not succumbed to compromising the cause to the enticements of previous regimes. On the other hand, once in his rebel life, he was asked by former comrades-in-arm to join them in the reformist action, a splinter group of MNLF. Bluntly, he refused them. Later he would be accused of being a non-conformist and worse, a Misuari puppets. These accusations, however, never divert him, for he was quite conflict of his own ideas and convictions.
Muslim-Christian integration, which is mandated by the charter of Mindanao State University, was one of his major efforts in the campus. The bitter years of the revolution saw him practically holding the bridge together through sheer effort of his will in the face of the widening gap between groups. As a result,he became as “Kaka Duma” – a brother, father and adviser of both Muslim and Christian on Campus. Thisunofficial role also brought about his ascent to the deanship of MSU college of Sports Physical Education and Recreation (SPEAR) because it was Christian faculty, staff and students who overwhelmingly voted for him.
Avidly reading the biography of the world’s great military generals who have won famous wars in his past-time. Among his favorites are Martin Luther king Jr. and General Joseph Garibaldi the former for advocating the birth of justice and the latter for leading his men in a silent but productive revolution. He follows Luther king’s advocacy and strongly discourages among his Muslim brothers the perpetuation of injustice especially when it is the urban poor Christian who lives are at stake.
As a physical culturist, his love for sport isdevelopment and physical education is superseded only by his commitment to the Bangsamoro cause. Alone and with no support from any source, he founded 39 years ago, the MSU Karate Club and acted as its lone instructor without any material benefit. He has patiently continued to nurture it to this day. His long years of sacrifice paid off when the club finally matured and established five in the provinces and cities in Mindanao and one in Saudi Arabia. Since its creation, the MSU Karate Clubs produces several Champions local and International, has always been the fertile ground for Muslim-Christians integration.
In 1994, in the Philippine National Games, The MSU Karate Club successfully gained national prominence when his Iranaon/Maranao students garnered three gold Medals and one silver – the first time Iranaon/Maranao gained these elusive awards in sports and martial arts. In 1996 LGULympics in Iloilo City, another Iranaon/Maranao Lass, Maylanie “Mailing” Sani, incidentally Sultan Sani’s daughter, won Bronze in Karatedo. The club also pave way for more prominence when his two sons, Datu Revie and Datu Hanifi won in international karate competitions like the 2003 8th karate games of the Adriatic in Italy, 2003 8th Czech open karate championship in Czech Republic, 2005 Asian Karate championship in Hong Kong, China and the 23rd South East Asian Games (SEAGAMES). One of the Sani’s long standing dreams in sport is that Like the Blacks of America who have brilliantly shone in sports, the Moros would someday proven champion in the prestigious of the Olympics.
After momentous event, he was invited to speak before an after audience of religious advocacies, academicians, administrations, and students who are all sports enthusiast. Everyone was mesmerized by his magnificent idea of non violence revolution. He profoundly believed in the principle of adoptive revolution and discovered them as perfected instruments to rehabilitate the cripple morale of the society.
Commander Juma’s relatively peaceful family life had consistently been constructed by the nagging pressure of his commitment to the Bangsamoro struggle. His wife was often times asked for friends and relatives about how she lived with the man without hesitation, she always admitted that side by side with the Moro cause, she is only the second love.
Duma Sani Sumndad (whose later father was only too democratic to allow his son to use his maternal surname) is scion of Sani, the first Sultan of Bubung-a-Marawi and he is heir apparent to the Sultan of Marawi and Guimba and the Royal houses of Ranao. Duma, whose parents are Hadji Mohammad Kharis and Bae-sa Marawi Hadja Sarifa Monera Mamalampac-Sani, is married to Hadja Faizah Minerva Alicer Saber, the second daughter of the late Mamitua Saber, Radiamuda sa Marawi, University Professor and Founding Father of Mindanao State University who conceptualized the creating of the Mindanao state University while he was in America. Duma’s wife mother, Hadja Aminah Orfia is a descendant of the Seviilas and Alicer of Leyte and Manila. Their happy union has been borne two handsome son ( Datu Azraf “REVIE” Sani, and Datu Hanifi Sani, both are frequents champions in the field of Karatedo, Locally and Internationally) and pretty daughter Maylanie Sani Boloto a University professor and also a National Champion in the same field.
The Iranaon/Maranao can only be too proud to have Sultan Prof. Sani as the only Iranao/Maranao Member of the five original Panelists who represented the MNLF in the 18th Meeting of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Minister in Saudi Arabia March 1989 and member of the MNLF panel in peace exploratory talks between the GRP-MNLF under the auspice of the organization of Islamic Conference at Cipanas, Indonesia, April 14, 1993, which eventually resulted in the signing of the 1996 Jakarta accord.
Today, Sultan Punduma B. Sani is expected by everyone to have already epitomized the concept of the jubilant and fulfilled revolutionary hero. Surprisingly, however, he has remained the humble, gentle military man and dignified academician that he is. He has never bragged nor uttered a single word about power or sources. His thoughts apparently are still in the struggle to finally achieved what the people of Mindanao have long cherished and hoped for.
Every time he asked about his plans for ARMM and the SPCPD, he only reminds people that, at this point in time, only strength of character can match the goals of the Moro cause. He opines that expertise and intelligence do not suffice in insuring on optimally effective Mindanao governance. Track record of the behavior of men are essential in the implementation of human design for peace and development, he adds. Sultan Prof. Sani’s mind is set on the stark reality that all men are only mere creation of Allah S.W.T and as such they should do things according to his will and to His way. He reminds everyone of his temporal status on earth and what counts to ALLAH S.W.T. is only the good deeds of men.
Sultan Prof. Sani firmly believes that ARMM and the SPCPD will only be a success if and only if, the men who shall be endowed and entrusted with bureaucratic responsibilities and financial and moral accountabilities will continue to be humble, magnanimous and consistent in their ways according to the will of Almighty God and continue to live for and fear Allah S.W.T.
As a military man in the revolution, he has been tried and tested. As an Academician, his thoughts and ideas are remarkable. As an administration, his work are outstanding. As community leader, his deeds are exemplary. As brother, he is always loving, accommodating andunderstanding. And in his totally as man, he is highly principle and spiritual stable. He is therefore, beyond doubts, a rarity in a sea of worldly me. He is man who gained therespect of most Bangsa Iranaon and the local Government officials until the present existence.
