Datu a Cabugatan of Masiu is equal power of the 15 royal sultans of Pangampong a Ranao, The royal house of Maruhom Dialaloden (Datu a Cabugatan of Masiu) and the Royal House of Maruhom Rahmatula (Sultan Samporna of Masiu) the two royal houses of Masiu have the exclusive right to assume alternately, as per the Igma and Taritib of Masiu, only male descendants of the lines of Maruhom Rahmatula and Maruhom Dialaloden could ascend to the titles and thrones of Sultan sa Masiu and Datu a Cabugatan sa Masiu under a rule of alternate succession (idal.)

Panoroganan Datu Palawan Digandang Disomimba, a descendant of the royal blood of Masiu, he is the son of Datu Disomimba Amaiboronai to Bae H. Sobaida Digandang, the royal couple variably descended from the two sons of Balindong bsar of Masiu, Maruhom Rahmatulah, Maruhom Dialaloden and Paramata Saimbo of Linuk Masiu. He is a former Public School Teacher of Tamparan, then Chief of Police of undivided municipality of Tamparan, also Guerilla Officer who fought against Japanese army in World War II, a Deputy Provincial Sheriff of the Court of first Instance of then undivided Lanao province, was the FIRST ELECTED MUNICIPAL MAYOR of Tamparan in 1959 and who had held the post for 30 years until to his untimely death on 1991..

He being a man of qualification with varied experiences. Under his uninterrupted successful administration as a Municipal Mayor of Tamparan and sometimes unopposed for 21 solid years, it was characterized with rapid progress with respect to the infrastructure programs, such as construction and concreting of roads (Provincial, Municipal, Barangay Roads, School Buildings, Wharfs, Hospitals, Health Centers, Artesian Wells, and he had help much in propagation of Islam by establishing the now existing 13 Maahad and Madaris particularly Islamic Mosques. In recognition of his leadership and administrative ability, he was elected so many times as President of the Lanao Del Sur Mayors League and Region XII-Central Mindanao Mayors League. He was designated as concurrent capacity as the Provincial Administrator by Governor Ali Dimaporo, and to act as Officer-in-Charge of the Province of LDS whenever the Governor is out of the province. In 1980, he was elected Vice Governor of Lanao Del Sur with an overwhelming majority over his political rivals (1980-1986). On February 15, 1985 he was crowned as DATU A CABUGATAN OF THE ROYAL HOUSE OF MASIU at Gapao Balindong, Taraka Lanao Del Sur.

His brother-in-law “Datu Binaning Macaradi succeeded him as elected mayor of Tamparan when he became elected vice governor of Lanao del sur in 1980. (Datu Binaning Macaradi is a son of late Municipal District Mayor Datu Macaradi Esmael) his administration was successful especially that he was responsible of changing the name of the town into the ISLAMIC MUNICIPALITY OF TAMPARAN (1980-1986)

Datu Hadji Alawiya Magoyag was appointed as OIC Mayor of Tamparan by the MLG-Minister Nene Pimentel, Jr. during the EDSA Revolution 1986 Under Freedom Constitution, and then he was replaced/relieved by Datu Palawan Disomimba (March 15, 1987). Again, Hadji Ibrahim Caris was appointed as OIC Mayor effective December 01, 1987 up to the time that qualified and elected Mayor is duly proclaimed. For love and respect of the good people of Tamparan, His Royal Highness, Datu Palawan Disomimba was again reelected the seventh time as their humble mayor due to his tested leadership. In his untimely death in 1991, the elected vice mayor Datu Camid Miraato became mayor of Tamparan. His son Sultan Topaan “Tony” Disomimba a newly crowned Datu a Cabugatan of the Royal House of Masiu and member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Lanao Del Sur, President of the Lanao Del Sur Kabataan Barangay Federation and Provincial Coordinator of Presidential Council for Youth Organization was elected Municipal Mayor of Tamparan on May 11, 1992, again elected mayor after the term of his wife Bae Janaree Pundato Disomimba (daughter of former OMA Secretary Dimas Pundato) to the present time.

Relation with Dimaporo

Bae Aragad is a sister of Bara, Aragad is the great-grandmother of Datu Palawan Disomimba while Bara was married to Mokayan of Binidayan from Candia clan. Gov. Sultan Ali Dimaporo and the late Mayor of Marogong, Sultan Abdulmadid Maruhom among the great-grandsons of Bae Bara. Bae Aragad and Bae Bara are descendants of Maupaat Sapaatula of Linuk Masiu, in short story, Sultan Ali Dimaporo and Datu Palawan Disomimba were second cousin, that made them political ally, close friend and “Balayi”. Their family was tied when Sultan Tony married to the daughter of late Sultan of Masiu Gov. Ali Dimaporo.

Former Lanao del sur Vice-Governor Datu Palawan Disomimba was the Datu a Cabugatan sa Masiu and the father of “Tony” Disomimba the reigning sultan of Masiu. Palawan accepted the title Datu a Cabugatan and allowed Governor Ali Dimaporo to take the title Sultan sa Masiu, even though it was the Disomimba family’s turn accordingly. That time the Datu a Cabutagan of masiu is the turn of the family line of Gov, Ali Dimaporo on Maruhom Dialaloden. Palawan Disomimba has double claims to the throne, and he agreed because of political expedient and to maintain the close family ties between Disomimba and Dimaporo. His son “TONY” accepted the title Datu a Cabugatan of Masiu after his father’s death to continue the good legacy that he started and later on assumed the title as Sultan of Masiu. Stepping in the footsteps of his relative Ali Dimaporo, “Tony” Disomimba, as chairman of 16 Royal Houses, recently received an advisory status by the government.

After the death of Ali Dimaporo, his successor in the pangampong of Masiu, the mayor of Tamparan (since 1992; previously, his father had held this position for more than 30 years) and Sultan sa Masiu Topaan “Tony” Disomimba re-established political connections between the Royal Houses and Manila. As a young man, he already saw the progress his father and the governor were making during that time. So when he became the Sultan of Masiu he continued that. And he also explored new possibilities by which the traditional leadership can work with the government. That is why he got so close to Arroyo, even before Arroyo, all the Presidents, with Ramos, with Cory Aquino. There were always meetings. He was always bringing his title of sultan, and his being mayor second. So when there are gatherings he will be more recognized as sultan rather than the mayor of Tamparan.

The first Royal Sultanates Conference on Unified and Effective Governance at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel took place on August 27-28, 2003; President Arroyo and “Toni” Disomimba took part. It was the first time that Moro royalty officially gathered with governmental functionaries to talk about governance. The intention of the conference was to “tackle important issues that could help secure an immediate, just and permanent peace in Mindanao.” The debate was important since, according to “Toni” Disomimba, “the empowerment and institutionalization of the sultanates as active participants in peace and development in Mindanao could be the key to the final solution of the complex Mindanao problem” (Manila Bulletin, July 12, 2003).

(One my sources mentioned that the late Datu a Cabugatan of Masiu was a close friend of late President Diosdado Macapagal, they were teachers and one time Macapagal visited Tamparan where he could walk freely without guards, my source mentions that Macapagal was a good friend o Palawan Disomimba in Iligan. During the term of Gloria Arroyo as President of the Philippine, Tony became close political ally of Glo also a good friends, he gave Glo a Grar as Bae a Labi a Dimasangkay of the Philippines, the basis is that Glo is the 7th generation of Sharif Alawi of Tagoloan, we knew that her mother was a native of Iligan.

(I remember during the mayors league on 1994 at CDO, I’m in-front of Glo and talking to her Muslim friends in Lanao with good smiled, She said (could you recall my last visit in Tamparan we rode a small vehicle, that was full and I insisted myself to in even full, so I need to visited my good friends there) referring the Disomimba family. That time she was a cabinet member and not yet a senator. I was there the mayors’ league to accompany my grandfather the sultan of Marogong. (Datu Ontay)

Claims to the Sultanates

In the wake of the branching out of the royal lineage over the centuries, many of the Sultanates are disputed especially in cases where the succession of male progeny had been broken for quite some time.

The incumbent Sultan of Masiu, Topaan Dsimomba does not think so. “I’m not alarmed at all by the rival claims to the Sultanates. This is in fact, a healthy situation,” Disomimba said. “It only goes to show a resurgence of interest in the old titles. I myself don’t mind, as long as everyone works for a common good. What is bad is when people just sit on their title and sleep on it.

The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people who originate from Mindanao, a major island in the Philippines. It comes from the words "sari" and "manok." "Sari" means cloth or garment, which is generally of assorted colors.  Manòk is a Philippine word for chicken.

It is the legendary bird that has become a ubiquitous symbol of Maranao art. It is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beak or talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiral motifs. It is said to be a symbol of good fortune

The Sarimanok is derived from a totem bird of the Maranao people, called Itotoro. According to the Maranao people, the Itotoro is a medium to the spirit world via its unseen twin spirit bird called Inikadowa.

The Sarimanok is also believed to have originated from an Islamic legend. According to the legend, Muhammad found a rooster in the first of the seven heavens. The bird was so large its crest touched the second heaven. Its crow roused every living creature except man. Judgement day would come once this celestial rooster ceased to crow

A Maranao legend also says of a Sultan's daughter being swept by a colorful rooster that became a handsome young man and they were never seen ever again. The Sultan then created replicas of the bird to remember his daughter by

Iranaon’s Pride

Iranaons/Maranao are well-known for the aspects of Culture and arts, they gained more prominence in the field of martial arts when the MSU Karate Club successfully garnered three gold Medals and one silver in the 1994 first Philippine National Games – the first time Iranaon/Maranao gained these elusive awards in sports, and up to the present time the club still gaining good records.

In the name of Sport and Martial Arts, Iranaons/Maranao exceed on it and became more and more prominences when the young prince of Marawi in the good name of Datu Revie Saber Sani (son of Sultan Duma S. Sani and grandson of late Mamitua Saber, Radiamuda sa Marawi) won Champion in the international karate competitions like the 2003 8th karate games of the Adriatic in Italy, 2003 8th Czech open karate championship in Czech Republic, 2005 Asian Karate championship in Hong-Kong, China and the 23rd South East Asian Games (SEAGAMES). Datu Revie S. Sani is the first Iranaon/Maranao became member of Republic of the Philippine Team (RP-TEAM) for International Competition in the field of Karatedo, and present President of FIMAA Jeddah Saudi Arabia. The Iranaons/Maranao. would someday proven champion in the prestigious of the Olympics as my father’s longstanding dream, Datu Revie said in his Interview.

Pamakot Ka Sa Masa Emanto

A Song of a Moro Artist

The King of Moro Song Datu Komeni Bansuan lunched his new album with the new song “Pamakot Ka”. It could really encourage and inspire each individual who would listen and internalize its deep meaning. Some of its line go this way “ My friend, pamakot ka, know yourself. Pamakot ka while you are young. Know what is happening in this world and think of what you can do. Pamakot ka while still you are healthy and strong. Face your future, don't ever think you cannot make for God has given you all. Isn’t he right in saying this so?

At this point of time, in this era of globalization wherein we can’t describe the kind of life we have. Life expansion decreases due to many illnesses and diseases. It becomes unpredictable when we can’t do anything but to face life as it is. Competitiveness among nations, tribes and even religion brings deep impact to our lives. Thousand of people lost their lives because of such conflict. Survival for poverty really a prime problem of human being. Million of people died because of have nothing to eat.

Now, is Komeni right of giving us a signal to move ahead and to strive hard inorder to survive from this vulnerable world? This is not advertising Komeni but it somehow gives us the lesson to be vigilant of our life.

Connect this message to our own distinctions and undertakings as individuals. As teachers for example, pamakotinka, value your responsibility of molding and teaching the young generation because perhaps time maybe too late for you to do it and you might regret after all. Do this while you are still in the position, while you are strong and while you have all the opportunities of doing it all.

The last line of Komeni’s song says “ Now is the time to reflect on. Ponder on and move fast”. This is just a mere song of an ordinary moro artist but let us not forget great move and action start from an ordinary and simple plan.
